This easy to read sign has all the elements of a great looking sign.
The heading with bright red outline, second letters and contacts are
quick to understand. When making a sign, keeping the text easy to
read is vital. Try to follow the design principles of 1-2-3. The lettering on the sign uses a different kind of stroke. It is border line (keyline) that is set 'inside' the letters out edges. To create this effect, open your graphics editor and select the simple font, (above is Helvetica bold italic) then stroke or outline the letter as normal. Then, right click the outline and change from 'outside' to 'inside'. You should also be able to adjust the thickness of the keyline. Why use this format? Just looks, one works equally well as the other. Had above been an outline, the red would sit under the joining of the word's letters. By using an inside stroke, the red is inside each letter and leaves a white freespace around the letter. This turns a simple font into a fancy font really quickly. Strokes as Objects. You can also apply the same 'inside outside' stroke treatment to objects. See this Kilmore Signs banner pic page 131. Using Italic Fonts. Another tip is to be consistent with italics. If you are using multiple lines of italic, make sure the angle is consistent. Looks wrong if different fonts have different angles that the letters have tilted to. |
