To do this, use a blending options or create a second layer, protect the pixels and soften the edges using the Gaussian Blur tool. Also, unless a special lighting effect is required, the light source should be the same for the pictures and shadows. To do this, set the light angle in Photoshop by rotating the little scroll wheel or punching in the numeric value. If you use the blending options, it should remain the same light source angle for all layers.
