Special Fonts and Characters

Making a special font for your sign is easy. If you have a corporate font style or have designed your own font etc. To keep the signage uniform and well laid out, we suggest that you attach the font in an email and send it to us. It can then be installed on our servers and saved into your own special client file for use by your company in all advertising and designs printed.

Special fonts that are available on the internet. When you look and/or find a special font such as a curly script, block font, cursive or fancy font, please look for these attributes:
1. The font has a well drawn set of strokes. This means that the up strokes should be slightly thinner than the down strokes.
2. The kerning (space between each letter) is self adjusting. A well drawn special font will increase, decrease the letters for certain character combinations. E.g. XA will require an adjustment lesser than CO etc.
3. If you find a font you like and it does not kern correctly, please point this out to the team. They will make a simple notepad doc and store it in your client file.
4. Another interesting point about fancy fonts. Please look for the overall letter combination when on a straight line. If the ascenders and descenders are too unevenly spaced, the words may appear to be 'broken' and become hard to read. A short note, many people believe that Times New Roman is the best font. Not so, It is not suitable for large sizes as the serifs and WOS all become ugly. Choose a different derivative to replace Times.

Special Fonts and Characters

Nodes and special font attributes. When choosing a special font or drawing one for your own uses, it is important to have smooth flowing lines and curves. Use a program such as Illustrator or Corel and draw your special font with 'bezier' lines and curves. For example, the letter 'O' should have top middle left right and 45 degree locking node points so that it can be scaled up or down in size.

Traditional signwriters always look for the weight of stroke when drawing (replicating) a font on a wall for the sign. So, when you draw the font on the computer, follow the same principle of getting thin and thick strokes appearing in your special font.

A good place to find fonts on the web is What the font. It is a commercial site though but has lots you can learn from.

The inside of a Font Color Views 740

Using color inside your font can also give you fancy font looks without actually manipulating the shape of the font. Most computer programs allow fill of color inside and outside of objects. In this case, the object would be your font.
To do so, break apart or combine or convert the font to a shaped object. It will allow effects such as contouring, outlining, blending etc and you can also use the new font style trimmed inside or outside of a photo etc.

FAQ - Do you make Plastic Signs ? No. 16
We do, the options are Acrylic in various thicknesses and colours, hardened plastics like HIPS (Polystyrene), Forex etc., and also the corrugated plastic called Corflute.

Sure, it is where the business all began. Plastic signs can be quoted at the calculator.
Corflute is a twin walled polypropylene material that ideal for short term outdoor and for lightweight hanging indoor signage. The 5 millimeter thickness can be further processed using a laser cutter and is ideal for screen printing of signs. This site is dedicated to producing all varieties of signworks. To quote a Corflute sign, try going over to our price calculator and simply typing in a size and quantity of signs required. The prices can include GST and if any set up is required for the forming of art.
Hardened plastic materials are also used to make signage. It falls within the scope of High Impact Polystyrene, Acrylic perspex and others like Forex and Expanded PVC etc. If your company needs a special plastic sign material please let us know by firing off a quick question.

Screen Printing of signage is available for large runs. Screen printing has advantages for making lots of signs. It keeps the cost per unit lower and allows a more traditional color control system. Spot colors like Pantone or RAL are available. When screen printing on plastic signs, if a color is to traverse to the edges, over sized plastic sign material is cut to size, then printed, then later when the inks are cured, reframed to the final sign size. It is best to ask us prequote for most screen printing signs because their are many variables and methods that can be used to help keep your costs down. E.g. Less than 50 units may be better to digitally print. If you can send an overview fax design and thumbnail sketch etc, It will help you immensely.
